Romanian Gov't approves memorandum on renegotiating 2 conventions on natural gas transmission from Russia
Romania will renegotiate with Russia two conventions on making available the gas transmission capacity on the gas pipelines located on the Romanian territory, in its entirety.
The Government approved on Wednesday a memorandum on opening negotiations with Russia on the convention draft between the Romanian and Russian Governments regarding the transport of natural gas on the Romanian territory, after the European Commission (EC) had launched action against Romania for having violated the provisions of Regulation No 1775/2005 on conditions for access to the natural gas transmission networks.
'It is a complex situation, in a domain of maximum interest, namely the sector of energy resources,' Government spokesperson Andrei Zaharescu said.
Zaharescu also said that on June 26, 2009, the EC launched action against Romania for violating the provisions of Regulation No. 1775/2005.
'In this case, the talks regard Romania not having observed the obligations to make available the entire capacity on the gas pipelines, the subject of a convention sealed between Romania and Russia in 1986 and 1996. These conventions expire in 2012, 2023 respectively and the Romanian authorities informed the European Commission that the observance of the obligations requires the renegotiation of these two conventions. Therefore, the memorandum establishes the opening of negotiations with Russia over these two conventions,' Andrei Zaharescu pointed out.
