Romania's Energy Strategy could be drawn up in about two weeks, official says

Romania's Energy Strategy could be drawn up in about two weeks, with the document including among its objectives keeping an affordable energy price for end-consumer, State Secretary in the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Tourism (MECT) Maricel Popa told a specialized conference on Thursday.

"The investments in energy and transport in Romania in the past 25 years have not led to finalizing major projects. We have now seven projects included in the strategy [Romania's National Energy Strategy]. In terms of public services, Romania has great potential to draw investments in energy and transport. We cannot talk about energy efficiency by producing energy from coal-based plants with technology from the 1960s. In about two weeks Romania's Energy Strategy will be drawn up and it will aim at keeping an affordable price for end-consumer and let us not forget about the environment, green energy (...) The energy strategy draft has been developed by the Ministry of Economy in cooperation with the business environment and the NGOs in Romania," said Popa.

Under Romania's 2015-2035 Energy Strategy, the necessary investments in the Romanian energy sector for 2015-2035 amount to some 100 billion euros. Considered necessary or strategic investment objectives are the development of Units 3 and 4 of Cernavoda nuclear power plant, the development of hydro-power plant with pumping accumulation Tarnita - Lapustesti, the development of smart metering and smart grid infrastructure, and the development or expansion of interconnection capacities and facilitating export and import to capitalize on the higher electricity prices on other markets, respectively.

Moreover, the Strategy provides for exploiting natural gas deposits in the Black Sea, investments to meet the EU environmental requirements and upgrading coal-based plants.

Several companies involved directly or indirectly in the energy efficiency sector in Romania, together with representatives of relevant authorities are participating in Thursday's 'Romanian Efficiency Forum' in Bucharest.
