Romania needs new nuclear capacities, clean, stable, affordable prices energy
Large reactors, as well as small modular reactors have a valuable role to play, and Romania needs new nuclear capacities, clean, stable energy at affordable prices, as a solution to achieve energy security and consumer protection, said the general director of Nuclearelectrica, Cosmin Ghita, according to a press release from Nuclearelectrica.
As part of the civil nuclear projects development program, the company organized in partnership with ROMATOM, together with Candu Energy Inc., a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, NuScale Power, Fluor and Sargent & Lundy, in the period 19- October 21, 2022, the event "Nuclear energy projects from Romania - Days of Suppliers", with the aim of bringing together an important part of the top national industry of companies producing equipment and providing services, which can play an essential role in the development of nuclear projects strategic of Romania.
"We have a firm commitment to developing both large-scale and small modular reactors. We believe both have a valuable role to play. Large-scale reactors can provide clean-band electricity at affordable prices and, in addition, SMRs can ensure grid flexibility as well as non-electrical applications such as heat and hydrogen. Both are needed to ensure security of supply and decarbonisation, and Romania needs new nuclear capacity, needs clean, stable energy and at affordable prices, as a solution to achieve energy security and consumer protection. We are also committed to leveraging our company's 26+ years of expertise in nuclear operation at the highest safety standards and 50+ years of industry expertise Romanian nuclear plants and to become a regional leader in operation, a center for production and assembly of components and a center for preparing the future you have generations of nuclear engineers. In this sense, we are committed to building strong and reliable partnerships with local suppliers and to involve the Romanian industry in such complex projects," Cosmin Ghita stressed.
Teodor Chirica, president emeritus of ROMATOM, stated that the recent inclusion of nuclear energy in the Taxonomy for Sustainable Financing represents a positive signal for the further development of national nuclear projects and a clear recognition of the role of this technology in the framework of European efforts to decarbonize and reduce dependence on energy imports.
John Hopkins, president and executive director of NuScale Power, expressed his confidence in the potential of suppliers from the nuclear industry in Romania to participate in such an important project for Romania and emphasized that for NuScale building a robust supply chain for tomorrow's nuclear technology's advance was a priority from day one.
For his part, Bill Fox, executive vice-president, Nuclear Canada SNC Lavalin, signaled that the CANDU nuclear reactors at Cernavoda offered Romania great reliability and energy security, generating 20% of the country's electricity, and contributed to a cleaner air by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 10 million tons of CO2 per year.
