Romania, elected Vice-President of IAEA's 62nd General Conference
Romania was elected on Monday as Vice-President of the 62nd General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) - the most important decision-making body of the Organisation - that takes place between 17 and 21 September in Vienna, a release of the Foreign Affairs Ministry informed.
The office will be exercised by Romania's permanent representative to the international organisations in Vienna, namely Ambassador Calistrat Istrate, the MAE release mentions.
According to the quoted source, the election in this office "represents a recognition of the substantial and constant contribution of our country to the IAEA activities, as well as of the potential of Romania's nuclear sector.
Furthermore, fulfilling the duties as Vice-President of the General Conference is part of the actions meant to define Romania's profile as the future presidency of the EU Council in the first semester of 2019, at the level of the international organizations based in Vienna and to contribute to the efforts to promote Romania's bid as a non-permanent member in UN Security Council for the period 2020-2021, the MAE mentioned.
On the agenda of the current session of the General Conference also included among others are aspects regarding nuclear guarantees, nuclear safety and security, technical cooperation, North Korean nuclear file.
