Pitesti-based Nuclear Research Institute to be one of the parties in charge with building of the ALFRED reactor
Pitesti-based Nuclear Research Institute (RATEN ICN), alongside the Italians from ANSALDO Nuclear and ENEA, on Wednesday signed to become part of the consortium to be in charge with the implementation of the ALFRED (Advanced Lead Fast Reactor European Demonstrator) project in Romania, worth one billion euros, following a lead-cooled nuclear reactor demonstrator to be built on the Mioveni-based platform of ICN Pitesti (in southern Romania).
Participating in the signing of the Agreement for building the reactor there were Minister Delegate for Energy, Constantin Nita, and the representatives of the signatory companies.
The building of the reactor is meant to solve certain problems related to nuclear security, treatment and conditioning of the radioactive waste and also the physical protection of radioactive materials and nuclear installations.
‘This is another extremely important project in the field of energy, after the signing of the Memorandum with our Chinese partners early this year for the Oltenia Energy Complex. In fact, ANSALDO Nucleare, one of the partners involved in the ALFRED project, will also took care of the completion of construction works at the Units 3 and 4 at the Cernavoda Plant. Moreover, I want to specify that Romania maintains the same level of determination when it comes to its development plans in the energy field. The ALFRED project will take 15 years to develop and it will cost around one billion euros', Minister Delegate for Energy, Constantin Nita, told the press conference that followed the signing of the Agreement.
