OMV Petrom sets casing drilling world record at Romania's Totea field
OMV Petrom, the largest oil and gas company in southeastern Europe, set a casing drilling world record both by the column diameter and well depth, informs a company release.
The record was certified by Odfjell Well Services for the Totea 4545 well which was drilled with a 20-inch column to a depth of 505 meters in the Totea Deep field in the southern region of Oltenia. This is the first phase in the drilling of well 4545, which is estimated to reach a total depth of 3,500 meters.
'With two thirds of our output coming from fields that have been producing for some 50 years now, it takes the latest technology and adequate expertise to continue providing oil and gas in Romania. In the past eight years, our investments in exploration and production activities amounted to about 5.5 billion euros,' said OMV Petrom CEO Mariana Gheorghe.
The casing drilling technology is used in the mining and dewatering projects and was introduced in the oil industry in 2002. Since 2012 OMV Petrom has used it for 17 projects.
The benefits of the casing drilling technology are mainly the cut of operational costs, the reduction of the drilling time and of the number of incidents caused by clogged pipes.
The Deep Totea field was identified in 2011, following a 3D seismic survey program. It is located in the southwestern part of the country, in Oltenia, and may be the most important onshore gas discovery in Romania in recent years.
Four wells have been drilled so far at the Deep Totea deposit which has a daily output of 4,600 boe, accounting for about 5% of the gas production of OMV Petrom in Romania.
Petrom is the largest oil and gas group in Southeastern Europe, with activities in the Exploration and Production, Gas and Power, Refining and Marketing sectors. The group has strengthened its position in the South-East European oil market after a long modernization and streamlining process that saw investments in excess of 8.8 bln euros in the past eight years.
