Net coal production amounted to 1.962 million tonnes of oil equivalent in H1 2016

Romania's H1 2016 net coal production amounted to 1.962 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe), down 12.2 percent (273,000 toe) from H1 2015, according to data with the National Institute of Statistics. 

In H1 2016, Romania imported 235.600 toe of net coal, down 11,500 toe (4.7 percent) from H1 2015's imports. 

Despite a falling trend in the domestic production of pit coal, Romania still ranks 7th in the European Union in terms of pit coal production, according to the Energy Strategy project posted on the website of the Romanian Ministry of Energy. 

The supply of pit coal from Romanian producers is smaller than demand, covering 36 years against the current production figures of 1.5 million tonnes a year. 

The lignite deposits leased out can secure efficient exploitation for nearly 15 years against production figures of 30 million tonnes a year.
