MOU promotes stronger ties among Canadian and Romanian nuclear suppliers

The Organization of Canadian Nuclear Industries (OCI) and the Romanian Atomic Forum Association (ROMATOM) are proud to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for cooperation in the nuclear power field, a press release informs.

The MOU was signed by Dr. Ron Oberth, President of OCI, and by Dr. Ioan Rotaru, President of ROMATOM, at the end of the first day of a Canada-Romania Nuclear Industry Workshop at the Bucharest Hilton organized jointly by ROMATOM and OCI.

This MOU outlines several ways that OCI and ROMATOM will work together in identifying opportunities for nuclear power projects in Romania, Canada, and other countries on which OCI and ROMATOM companies can cooperate. The OCI-ROMATOM MOU will also encourage and facilitate cooperation among Canadian and Romanian nuclear research institutes and universities on nuclear research, development, and nuclear education.

The two day workshop co-hosted by OCI and ROMATOM during July 2-3, 2015, focused on presenting the capabilities of both the Canadian and Romanian nuclear industries and sharing experience and best practices in delivering new nuclear projects.

The Canada-Romania Nuclear Industry Workshop was the focal point of a three day 12 company OCI-led Trade Mission to Romania that kicked off with a July 1 Canada Day Celebration hosted by the Canadian Ambassador Joanne Lemay and also included visits to Romanian manufacturing facilities as well as informal business to business meetings.

Both the President of OCI and the President of ROMATOM expressed their confidence and interest in the extension of cooperation between the two organizations.

“OCI celebrates this MOU signing and looks forward to building a strong working relationship with the Romanian nuclear supplier community in developing future nuclear projects that  will lead to a secure energy supply in the region, creation of jobs for both Canada and Romania and to further technological developments” said OCI President Dr. Ron Oberth.

Dr. Ioan Rotaru, ROMATOM President, stated that: “Romania and Canada are long term partners in the development of Cernavoda NPP Units 1 and 2 which are among the best performing nuclear units in the world in terms of capacity factor since in-service. We are confident that future cooperation between our organizations will yield successful projects”.

Organization of Canadian Nuclear Industries (OCI) is an association of 180 leading Canadian suppliers to the nuclear industry in Canada and foreign markets. OCI companies employ more than 10,000 highly skilled and specialized engineers, technologists and trades people who design reactors, manufacture major equipment and components, and provide engineering services and support to CANDU nuclear power plants in Canada as well as to CANDU and Light Water Reactor (LWR) plants in offshore markets. OCI promotes the continued and expanded use of nuclear energy in Canada and supports member companies in both domestic and international nuclear markets.

Romanian Atomic Forum Association (ROMATOM) has more than 35 active member companies that work in nuclear power equipment manufacturing, construction and erection, engineering design, and other services that support the nuclear industry in Romania. ROMATOM communicates with relevant governmental departments in promoting the safe, efficient and sustainable development and application of nuclear energy in Romania. ROMATOM is a member of the European Atomic Forum (FORATOM) and an active party in both the European and the national debate on energy strategy and sustainable policies.
