Government approved a financial aid to the Hunedoara Energy Complex
The government approved on Wednesday an emergency ordinance to provide financial aid to the Hunedoara Energy Complex, in the form of a loan from privatization income, Prime Minister Victor Ponta announced.
"Thousands of people were waiting for this," Ponta said after the ordinance was passed.
"It's a first step for the reimbursement, firstly, of the illegal state aid provided by [Prime Minister Emil] Boc's govern, which is the reason for the current state of the company," Energy Minister Andrei Gerea declared.
The European Commission approved the aid and issued a media release about it on April 21, mentioning that the saving of the Hunedoara Energy Complex was in line with the European Union norms on state aids and that Romania has committed to submit a restructuring plan for the future viability of the company, should it be unable to reimburse the aid within six months.
The state-own electricity and heat producer will get 167 million lei (approximately 37.7).
