ForMin Aurescu : the access to energy is a security matter

Minister of Foreign Affairs Bogdan Aurescu stated, on Friday, in the opening of the conference titled "Regional approaches to the concept of energy security" that, given the backdrop of events in the eastern vicinity of the European Union, access to energy is not only an economic matter, but also a security matter and the states in the region must extend cooperation in the energy security sector.

"In the past years we have noticed negative developments, such as the economic crisis and economic instability, disruptions in energy supply, provoked by political turbulence and armed conflicts not only in the Middle East and Northern Africa, but also in our vicinity, in Ukraine. The recent events in our vicinity have proven once more that access to energy is not only an economic matter, but also a security matter", said Aurescu, emphasizing also that each state must approach the problem of energy while not excluding regional cooperation.

In this context, the head of Romanian diplomacy reaffirmed our country's support as a NATO member state for continuing the Euroatlantic integration process of states in the region.

"Romania, as an EU and NATO member state, will constantly promote regional processes envisaging consolidation of democracy and will support the efforts to stabilize the security of southeast Europe, also through dialogue formats as that proposed by RACVIAC", said Aurescu.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs has participated on Friday in the opening of the international conference titled "Regional approaches to the concept of energy security", taking place in Bucharest and organized by the Regional Arms Control Verification and Implementation Assistance Centre (RACVIAC) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

RACVIAC was founded in October 2000 as an initiative of the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe, to offer assistance in the domain of arms control, and for promotion of measures to increase trust and security in southeast Europe.

Later on, the expansion of RACVIAC activity to include larger political-military themes, that also regard the reform of the security sector as a premise to ameliorate regional stability, led to the renaming of the Center as "RACVIAC - Center for Security Cooperation".
