Energy Ministry has set up a mining coordination committee

Energy Minister Victor Grigorescu has set up a mining coordination committee tasked with analysing the current state of the country's mineral energy resources (coal and uranium) and coming up with measures to increase efficiency and streamline operations in order to meet the demand for energy resources needed to achieve Romania's objectives of energy security, competitiveness and sustainable development, the Energy Ministry reported in a press statement on Friday.

The committee, to be coordinated by State Secretary Corina Popescu, is made up of ministry's specialists and specialists from each subsector of the mining industry, representatives of mining companies, the academe, employers' associations and trade unions.

"The mining sector needs the best recovery and reorganisation measures to be able to maintain a balanced energy mix in the National Energy System. We need urgent and viable measures for the sector to survive, and the specialists of the coordination committee are tasked with identifying the solutions as soon as possible taking into account the reality facing the sector and the international developments," committee chair Corina Popescu is quoted as having said in the statement.

The first meeting of the Mining Coordination Committee is scheduled for next week to agree on steps to achieve its objectives.
