East Europe Wind Summit 14-15 June InterContinental Bucharest Romania

Noppen – after successes of Wind Energy Events in India, China and Turkey – organized the East Europe Wind Summit in Bucharest on 14th&15th June 2012. The Summit was attended by over 80 key market players.

 

Chairmen of the event were Alexandru Valeriu Binig, Director of Deloitte and Robert Ghelasi, Director of Energy, Capital Partners.

 

Opening speech at the summit was given by Paula Corban, Council of White & Case LLP. Her presentation covering overcompensation, managing market risks and the legal framework in Romania was well received by the entire audience. Her speech set the trend of a strong 2-day agenda. Alexandru Valeriu Binig, director of Deloitte delivered a detailed perspective on understanding the market developments and investments in wind farms in Romania. Utku Ünal, Energy Engineer of MWH Consultants gave a very affectionate presentation about the Turkey wind energy market and regulatory guidelines of the sector. The Turkey focused speech was followed by Rainer Hinrichs-Rahlwes, president of the European Renewable Energies Federation (EREF), his presentation `Where the Energy Sector is Heading to` ended with serious and very valuable recommendations and conclusions to make the renewable energy market stronger and more effective till 2020. Smaranda Ghinea, a senior engineer specialist of Opcom gave a short but effective speech about the Romanian green certificates. Later in the day, Capital Partners was represented by director Robert Ghelasi. He shared his experience about the contractual structure of non-resource projects. In the afternoon Boaz Peled, managing director from Energy Rose Group pointed out investment criteria valid in the East Europe Market. Johannes Busmann, managing director with Prowind showed the best strategies to mitigate risks in wind farm projects. In the day one closure panel: Robert Ghelasi from Capital Partners, Johannes Busmann from Prowind, Boaz Peled from Energy Rose Group and Rainer Hinrichs-Rahlwes from the European Renewable Energies Federation (EREF) – under guidance from Alexandru Valeriu Binig from Deloitte -, exchanged views on the financing possibilities and challenges for wind farms in East Europe. The panellists did not save any passion elaborating on topics such as green certificates versus FITs, where is the smart money going, how much are investors willing to spend for which ROI, grid operators and their roles and responsibilities, banks and their guarantee criteria.

 

Ending the day Alexandru Valeriu Binig inspired optimism in the Romania market, that despite the many doubts, people must believe in the many opportunities the market offers.

 

On Friday the conference program started with a presentation of Yanos Michopoulos, vice president of Vestas and board member of the Hellenic Wind Energy Association. He opened the day with a valuable presentation about setting up and managing a wind farm. Second was the insightful case study from Daniel Fuchs, managing partner with Spiegelfeld International S.R.L. He delivered a long detailed experience sharing about the market challenges and pointed out market situation advantages. Ilko Iliev, Ceo from Inea Consulting Ltd. drafted an overview of the markets Bulgaria and Romania, and he introduced the potentials of Russia and Ukraine to the investors. Ana-Maria Ghita, associate attorney-at-law from Wolf Theiss gave detailed information about renewable energy outlines in Romania. The closing presentation from Markus Vrieling, Ceo from Lamar Company pointed out good and bad practices of wind farms.

 

Prominent industry leaders introduced their technologies and services throughout the second day program: TKF spoke about cable solutions and project financing. TPA Horwath elaborated on an analysis for investors who are interested in developing a wind farm in Poland and/or Romania. Suzlon discussed about the trends and their technologies in the current market.

 

Closing the event were Markus Vrieling from Lamar Company, Wojciech Sztuba from TPA Horwath Poland and Yanos Michopoulos from Vestas/Hellenic Wind Energy Association, joining in the panel on `The Do’s and Don’ts of Developing a Successful Wind Farm in East Europe` led by Daniel Fuchs from Spiegelfeld International Ltd. The audience and speakers participated actively in issues such as quality versus cost saving, lesson learning, wind production and wind measurement, importance of raw wind data, and third party involvement from certification companies.

 

In his end remarks Robert Ghelasi from Capital Partners stressed the fact that the 2-day agenda allowed him to receive viewpoints from very different angles, all viewpoints that are very important to grasp the entire picture of what is happening in the market. He also expressed the fact `to have witnessed some of the best presentations in the past 3-4 years`.

 

 

This summit came after the Solar Energy Summit , organized on 24-25May in Istanbul Turkey

 

The Summit was attended by 60 key market players. Chairmen of the event were Engin Türe from GENSED and Ciprian Glodeanu, President from RPIA.

 

The opening speech at the summit was given by Engin Türe from Gensed. He opened the conference with a very informative presentation about the status of Turkey’s Solar Energy. Following him was Mete ?en, Vice Chairman of the World Energy Council who gave a detailed presentation about the solar energy status in Turkey. ?aban Demir, a renewable energy expert from EPDK continued with government initiatives, news and updates about the solar market in Turkey. Özgür Sarpda?, business development manager of Else Energy based himself on his own experiences to elaborate on the latest developments of the solar market. The agenda progressed with ?brahim Erden, business development manager of EnerjiSa, who talked about the toughest challenges and solutions, you can expect from the solar energy market. Day one`s Turkish Market topics closed with a focus on the successful partnership between Gehrlicher and Merk Solar presented by Ömer Cihan Karahan, general manager of Gehrlicher Merk Solar.

 

From a regional point of view Alexander Zachariou, president of Helapco, informed us about how the government supports the solar energy industry in Greece and a brief view about the important solar projects going on there. Ciprian Glodeanu, president from RPIA, explained the solar energy situation in Romania and what will happen in the future. He also briefed the audience on the procedures and incentives. The last regional point of view on day one was from Wolfram Rehbock, senior partner from Arzinger, bringing insights in Ukraine`s legal framework for the energy sector.

 

On day one sponsor LtiReenergy A.?, represented by the business development manager new markets, Martin Brawand, introduced their technologies and equipments.

 

The last session on Thursday was a panel about expectations in the region for solar energy: Ciprian Glodeanu from RPIA, ?aban Demir from EPDK and Özgür Sarpda? from Else Enerji discussed the benefits of the market, the position of the government, obstacles and challenges and how to overcome them when wanting to enter the solar energy market in Turkey. The discussion was moderated by Engin Türe from Gensed.

 

On Friday the conference started with financial topics: finance and risk insights were brought by Ömer Demirhan, manager of business modeling and investment advisory from KPMG, Andi Aranitasi, banker of power & energy utilities from EBRD and last but not least TanerI??k, country manager of Turkey from Atradius. Ömer Emre Orhan, the mechanical engineer from Fichtner gave a highly appreciated presentation about technologies and feasibility examples in Turkey. He was followed by Derek Tomasi, associate from Ost Energy, who discussed solar plant appraisals in emerging markets. Two valuable case studies closed the presentation sessions, one from Alex Cosmetatos, technical director from NurEnergie, who showcased his experiences in a CSP Project in Crete and the other one from Anis Kenida, a project manager in the international business development department at Abengoa Solar, who presented innovative technology solutions for sustainability in their projects.

 

Noppen closed the event by having a discussion panel with Alex Cosmetatos from NurEnergie, Anis Kenida from Abengoa Solar, Mehmet Kapusuz from EnerjiSa, and Derek Tomasi from Ost Energy and was governed by Ciprian Glodeanu from RPIA. They discussed how to successfully operate solar projects in the region.
