Coal production, down by 11.8pct in the first five months of 2016

The coal net production of Romania has totaled 1.647 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) in the first five months of 2016, by 11.8pct (219,800 toe), smaller than the one in the similar period of 2015, according to centralized data by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

In the mentioned period, Romania imported 201,100 toe net coal down by 24,300 toe (10.8pct) the amount imported in the same period of the year 2015.

Although in the past years the national pit coal production has had a downtrend, Romania still ranks 7 among the pit coal producers in the EU member states, according to the Energy Strategy's project published on the Energy Ministry's website.

The pit coal offer at the level of the current producers in Romania is smaller than the demand, and the reserves at the current production level (1.5 million toe per annum) score 36 years.

The lignite reserves leased could ensure their efficient exploitation for yet another 15 years, at a rd 30 million tonnes / year production level.
