Ceremony for the finalisation of the works for the first stage of the BRUA gas pipeline
President Klaus Iohannis stated on Saturday, on the occasion of the visit to the Unit for natural gas compression Jupa, that Romania is the second big producer of natural gas in the EU, but even so, half of the households use heating with wood.
He congratulated the Transgaz company for finalising ‘ the most ambitious project in the domain of energy’ when referring to the BRUA gas pipeline, project made with European funds as well.
‘In this way, the president added, Romania proves its capacity to put to value correctly its geo-strategic position and gets close to the statute of regional energy hub.’
In his turn, premier Ludovic Orban stated, on Saturday, that methane gas must reach as many of the Romanians’ houses as possible and lead to the increase of the quality of their life, in this sense, the government allocating over one bibuillion euro to set up distribution grids in the localities which do not benefit from these facilities.
‘Romanian gas must reach the Romanians’ houses and must increase the life quality for each of them. We guarantee this as, besides the Transgsaz investments, we have already allocated over one billion euro – 234 million euro from the present financial year and 800 million euro from the future one – to set up gas distribution in the localities which do not benefit from connection to the gas network.Similarly, we support, both from European funds and from the funds for modernisation, extremely important investments, for the use of natural gas in the production in co-generation systems of electricity and thermal energy with yields of over 95%’ the premier said.
He showed that the central heating system in Romania needs massive investments to reduce the losses, in the context where this sector ‘has suffered enormously’ over the last twenty years.
At the same time, the head of the government mentioned that the projects for the petrochemical industry so that the gas be put to value in a superior way.” I end by saying that we will support those projects which use this resource, natural gas, in a superior way. We should not forget that we had a developed petrochemical industry which could be rebuilt by relying on this important resource’ the premier said.
The president of Romania, Klaus Iohannis and the premier Ludovic Orban took part, at Jupa, county Caras-Severin, to the finalisation of the BRUA gas pipeline, an investment of 423 million euro which allows the diversification of the sources of gas supply for Romania.
The BRUA project has as an objective the access to new gas sources as well as the facilitation of the Caspian gas transport to the markets in Central and Eastern Europe.
The first phase ensured bidirectional transport capacities of 1.5 billion cubic metres per year to or from Bulgaria and 4,4 billion cubic metres per year to or from Hungary.
The project was acknowledged as of strategic importance by the European Commission.
