Calota (ANRE): Energy storage becomes priority for Romania; having over-production and exporting, unacceptable

Energy storage must become a priority for Romania, which should rather increase the number of its large users among industrial users than export energy, Deputy Chairman of Romania's Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE) Emil Calota said Thursday."Energy storage should become a priority with Romania. It is unacceptable for a country to over-generate electricity and export it. It is similar to exporting any other raw material, timber for instance. Electricity should be used close to the point of use and it would be better for Romania to increase the number of large consumers among industrial users than to export energy," Calota explained.

He added that storage and power dispensing stations could be included in a legislative package the transmission operators may submit to ANRE's consideration.

Romania's electricity output in the first eight months of the year was standing at 43.33 billion KWh, up 4.4 percent from the similar period of the year before, while final electricity consumption advanced 6.2 percent, to 34.98 billion KWh, according to data with the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

Romania's electricity exports stood at 6.72 billion KWh, up 45 percent (2.09 billion KWh) from the first eight months of 2014.
