BRUA will ensure Romania’s access to at least three gas sources

BRUA project will ensure Romania’s access to at least three gas sources and will connect this country to the West European network, said Danut Andrusca, the minister of economy, at the annual conference of Gas Infrastructure Europe, held in Bucharest.

“We have in view that at least two new natural gas sources are consolidated - deposits in the Caspian Sea area and recently discovered sources in the Black Sea.In this context, connections are needed to allow access to these resources, which will increase the degree of energy security in the area,” the minister said.

Moreover, the new pipe, connecting Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Austria will link the area to the gas network in the west of Europe.

According to the minister, the calendar of works on BRUA project will be observed .

On June 4, Transgaz announced it began the construction of stage 1 of BRUA pipe, a national project, backed by the European Commission, allowing the diversification of gas sources.

BRUA project - Stage 1, supposes the construction of the natural gas transport pipe Podisor-Recas, 479 km long, diameter of 32” (Dn 800) and pressure of 63 bars. The estimated overall value for stage 1 is 478,6 million euros.

Transgas has been working since April 14, the three gas compression stations at Podisor, Jupa and Bibesti, within BRUA stage 1.

Of the eligible expenses 40% are covered by EU through a grant of 179.3 million euro.

The bi-directional natural gas flow will be ensured for the completion of BRUA project to: Bulgaria, through interconnector Giugiu-Ruse, 1.5 billion Scm/year (171,000 Scm/h), to 30 bars at the border and Hungary - through interconnector Horia-Csamadpalota, to 1.75 billion Scm/year (200,000 Scm/year) to 40 bars at the border.

BRUA project Stage 1 is a priority at national and regional level. Its is included on the list of Central East South Europe Gas Connectivity (CESEC), to make a significant contribution to the increase of safety in supplying natural gas and the degree of regional interconnectivity.
