ANRE: over 1.1 million household consumers of electricity chose the competition market last year
A number of 1,181,102 household consumers of electricity opted for the signing of the contracts on the competition market last y ear, according to the data of the National Authority for Regulation in Energy (ANRE).
The total number of consumption places for the end clients supplied by FUI (the last instance supplier on the regulated market ) dropped by 11.84% in 2018 against 2017. This trend is determined, mostly, by the migration of the household clients to the competition market, as a result of the special offers dedicated to this sector promoted by the active suppliers on the competition market’ the ANRE representatives said.
At the end of 2018, the end clients of electricity supplied by FUI were 7,226.189 dropping from 8,196.960 in 2017. Out of these, 7,036,274 were household against 8,003,759 in the previous year.
The deregulation of the electricity market started on 1 July 2013, and the whole process of deregulation was finalized on 31 December 2017.
But, the completely deregulated electricity market of Romania functioned only one year, as in December 2018 the government approved OUG 114/2018 which includes among others, the coming back to deregulated prices for all household consumers of electricity between 1 March 2019 and 28 February 2022.
In January 2019, Ion Lungu, the chairman of the Association for electricity suppliers of Romania (AFER) stated that no country in the EU came back to the deregulated prices of electricity, after the deregulation of the market, so suddenly and without any consultation of the specialists on the market.
According to him, the deregulated market of electricity of Romania functioned well enough until then, with growing competition among the suppliers. The latter, in the effort to draw as many household consumers as possible had huge price discounts and all kinds of offers such as a package of electricity with other services, gas, mobile telephony and maintenance.
