Trade: GPeC Report : E-commerce market in Romania exceeds 3.5 bln euro in 2018

Romanians made online purchases worth over 3.5 billion euro in 2018, 30 percent more than in 2017 when the amount spent was 2.8 billion euro, reads the GPeC 2018 e-Commerce Market Report, prepared by the major players in the Romanian e-commerce market.

According to the GPeC statistics and estimates, the growth of nearly 30 percent is one of the largest in Europe for the second consecutive year, and calculated as an average, Romanians have spent almost 10 million euro on online shopping every day in 2018, up as compared to the 7.67 million euro, the daily average recorded the previous year.

The total value of over 3.5 billion euro is strictly the e-tail segment, ie physical (tangible) products that were bought over the internet. Services, air tickets, holidays and travels, hotel bookings, show tickets or events, download content, etc. are not included.

The centralized data from 2Performant, cited in the GPec report, also show that during the past year a Romanian spent an average of 243 lei on an online purchase made on the computer, 210 lei for a purchase made on mobile phone respectively. In fact, about 80 percent of the traffic recorded by major online stores was generated last year by mobile devices, up 10 percent from 2017, and 30 percent as compared to 2016.

As regards the frequency of store visits by buyers, GPeC and iSense Solutions show that they opt, on an average, for nine stores per year, at a frequency of 3-4 times a week, while non-buyers visit five online shops in 12 months, with a lower frequency (once a week).

GPeC, the most important e-commerce event in Romania, centralizes the data and publishes each year the official report of the Romanian e-commerce market and represents the largest community of online stores in the country.
