Trade: E-commerce market of Romania worth 8.4 bln lei; 89 pct of Romanians still pay cash
The value of the e-commerce market in Romania has reached, in 2015, 8.4 billion lei, a 31 percent increase year-over-year, while most Romanians (89 percent) still opt for cash payment of ordered products or services, show the estimates of the online payment processor PayU Romania.
Concurrently, in the period between April 2015 — March 2016, the online payment operator processed transactions totaling over 1.2 billion lei, 44 percent higher than the same period of the past fiscal year.
According to the quoted source, the products most bought online by consumers are IT&C products, with over 40 percent of online sales, with the average shopping cart totaling for this segment totaling 700 lei, three times more than the general average. Second in the chart are orders in the Fashion & Beauty category, followed by Home & Deco, and children's products.
Overall, the average value of the Romanian online shopping cart has increased by approximately a third, reaching 260 lei, the PayU Romania data show. At the same time, the largest online transaction was registered in eTail and exceeded 140,000 lei.
The market analysis of the online payment processor shows that, presently, 10% of Romanians pay by card (either standard or in installments) and only 1 percent choose other online payment methods (wire, iTransfer, etc.). Most shoppers (89 percent) choose to pay cash on delivery.
Furthermore, payments from mobile devices (tablets, smartphones) are still at an early stage and only 3 of 10 Romanians choosing to pay by card do so from such a terminal.
