Tourism : În 2016, tour operators recorded a total turnover of 1.74 billion lei
Romanian tour operators recorded last year a total turnover of 1.74 billion lei, with sales of their own tourist packages accounting for more than half (54.2 pct) of the figure, shows data centralized by the National Institute of Statistics.
Sales of individual services generated 35.7 pct of the turnover, and other revenues accounted for the rest of the amount.
Travel agencies last year recorded 726.62 million lei in turnover, with sales of their own tourist packages accounting for 54.9 pct of the total figure, sales of individual services standing at 37.4 pct, and other revenues accounting for 7.7 pct.
Tour operators and travel agencies provided services to a total of about 1.781 million tourists, of whom tour operators accounted for 67.7 pct.
Romanian tourists who sought the services of tour operators on the outbound accounted for 44.9pct of the total number of tourists who traveled with this type of agency, followed by 49 pct - Romanian tourists who booked domestic packages and foreign tourists who visited Romania - 6.1 pct.
For travel agencies, the total number of tourists who sought outbound services accounted for 71.1 pct of the total number, domestic tourism stood at 28.3 pct and inbound tourists - 0.6 pct.
The Romanian tourists who bought domestic packages offered by tour operators mainly opted for the seaside (57.7 pct), the mountain area (13 pct) and spas (4.2 pct). The preference ranking was similar for domestic tourism packages offered by travel agencies: seaside (37.8 pct), mountain areas (14.9 pct), spas (8.1 pct).
Accommodation services accounted for 52.5 pct of the tour operators' domestic tourist packages, for 45.3 pct of their inbound tourism activity and for 47 pct of their outbound tourism, respectively. Transport services were next with a share of 24 pct for outbound tourism, and food services (restaurant, café, bar) with 21.4 pct for domestic tourism activities. The fee charged by tour operators ranged between 8.4 pct and 8.7 pct.
Statistical numbers for travel agencies are similar, with accommodation services for domestic tourism activities accounting for 55 pct, 52 pct for inbound tourism activities and 45.4 pct for outbound tourism. Transport services accounted for 24.2 pct for outbound tourism and 19 pct for inbound tourism, while the share of food services was 19.9 pct for domestic tourism and 16.3 pct for outbound tourism. The fee charged by travel agencies ranged between 7.5 pct and 8.7 pct.
