Tourism : Foreign tourists spent over 1.07 billion euros in Romania in 2013

The number of foreign tourists hosted by accommodation units in Romania stood at 1.714 million in 2013, their total spending reaching up to 4.79 billion lei (more than 1.07 billion euros), according to data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

The main reason for the foreign tourists' coming to Romania had to do with their businesses, congresses they participated in, conferences, training sessions, fairs and exhibitions (58 per cent of the total number of foreign tourists), the money they spent here accounting for 66.4 per cent of the total.

The second reason was for private travels (42 per cent), their spending amounting to 33.6 per cent of the total. Private travels include holiday travels, shopping, cultural and sports events, visiting friends and relatives, medical treatment, religion, transit and other activities.

Most of the foreign tourists came by air (74.4 percent of the total), 12.5 per cent used their personal car to come to Romania, while 9.2 per cent used the buses and 3.9 per cent other means (such as train, boats, rented cars, motorbikes etc.).
