Tourism: AirBNB includes Romania among top 5 trending travel destinations for 2020
Romania was included at number 5 in a ranking of 20 countries of top trending travel destinations for 2020 by the AirBNB online accommodation booking platform, according to a press statement released by the Ministry of Tourism on Tuesday.
AirBNB says that Romania, with its pristine hills and ancient rural villages, is the perfect destination for anyone looking for something off-the-beaten-track, where tourists can enjoy unique experiences, placing Romania in the company of well-established destinations, such as the United States, Spain, Thailand and Australia.
Romania saw a 298 percent year-over-year increase in bookings, Airbnb found, and ranked fifth on Airbnb's list.
According to data with the Nationals Institute of Statistics (INS), the arrivals of foreign visitors to Romania increased in the first eight months by more than 10 percent compared to the same period of last year.
"These estimates for 2020 show us once again the enormous potential that Romania has in terms of tourism. The INS data show an increase in foreign visitors who came to our country in the first eight months of 2019, and at the same time an increase of approximately eight percent in the number of Romanian tourists who chose to spend their holidays in our country and rediscover Romania as a tourist destination," Tourism Minister Bogdan Trif is quoted as saying in the statement.
According to him, free holiday vouchers were the ones that boosted the local tourism industry very much.
"At the same time, it must be said that this year there are about 15pct more privately-run companies that have chosen to grant holiday vouchers to employees. This proves once again that the measure was one that had not only a social role but also an important economic role," said Trif.
