Telecom. IT: Social Monitor: 84% of Romanian households connected to Internet, EU average is 90%

Online education may be an alternative not only for crisis periods but also for isolated communities. In Romania, only 84% of households are connected to the Internet, according to Eurostat data, to a Social Monitor, a project by Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Romania.

In comparison, at EU level, the average number of households with Internet access is 90%.

“The Social Monitor, a project by Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Romania, launches a new info graph about household Internet access in Romania, an important topic especially about online educational activities in the context of coronavirus pandemic. Online education could be an alternative not only for crisis periods, but also for isolated communities. It can suppose Internet access for almost all students. In Romania, only 84% of households are connected to the Internet, according to Eurostat data.  At EU level, the average number of households with Internet access is 90%,” the source mentions.

In western states such as Sweden, the percentage is 96%, in Germany 95%, in Spain 91%, while in Bulgaria it is 75% and in Hungary 86%.

“The good news is that in households with children, the percentage of people with access grows to 94%,” the document shows.

The share of people who can access Internet from home is lower in rural households (77%) and in needy households (60% in case of lower incomes).

In about half of cases, the reason of lack of connection is because of high costs of equipment and subscription.
