Telecom. IT: Romania first in EU for number of rapid Internet connections
Mid 2016 statistics show that Romania ranks first in EU for the number of rapid Internet connections, of at least 100Mbps, an ANCOM press release shows.
“By means of 19 million fix and broadband mobile Internet connections in Romania, users generated a traffic of about 2.7 million TB in the first 6 months of the year. Although more persons use mobile phones or tablets to access Internet, this traffic represents only 3% of total. In future, Romania will follow the provisioned trend at European level, of high mobile data traffic (by 8 times until 2020), mainly on smart phones and tablets, to the detriment of laptops,” said Eduard Lovin, CEO at ANCOM, on Tuesday.
Broadband mobile connections grew by 15%, to 14.8 millions in the first 6 months of 2016, wile fix connections grew by 5%, to 4.3 millions, compared to the same period of the previous year.
Fix broadband connections are made at high and very high speed rates in Romania, using top of the art infrastructure, allowing more than 56% of fix connections to reach best effort speeds of at least 100Mbps, 31% best effort speeds between 10Mbps and 100 Mbps, only 13% allowing speeds of 10Mbps or lower.
At the same time, active 4G connections continue their expansion, reaching 3.7 millions by mid 2016 (against 1.4 millions by mid 2015), which represent more than a quarter of overall mobile broadband Internet connections.
Through fix connections, Romanian users generated an overall download and upload traffic of 2.6 million TB in the first semester of 2016, with an average monthly consumption of 101GB, while a traffic of 0.07 million TB was obtained by means of mobile equipments. The average monthly mobile connection doubled compared to the first semester of 2015, from 0.33 GB to 0.63 GB.
