Romanian Government supports organic production projects
Prime Minister Victor Ponta on Wednesday declared that his Government has promised to support all the projects that fight food wasting, while providing healthy food for the people.
'As a prime minister and a parent, I am deeply committed to the idea that more than ever we must support, besides the general concept of alimentation, the concept of healthy food. The Government strongly supports the agricultural and organic production projects. We take pride in our potential and in the region's one; we must ensure the access of future generation to healthy food. This is a major challenge,' the Premier said at the opening of the works of the 29th European Regional Conference (ERC) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and of the 38th session of FAO's European Commission on Agriculture (ECA) hosted at the Parliament Palace.
Ponta mentioned that in 2013 Romania managed to export more food than it has imported.
'We have a couple of things we are proud of. We have a European Commissioner [Dacian Ciolos] who played an essential role in the drafting of the new European agricultural policy. After 20 years, we managed to import smaller amounts of food than we produce, and even to export more, thus making [Romania] secure in terms of food, and allowing it to help other countries. Romania is a project leader, together with FAO, of the Support Fund for the Republic of Moldova for food security in emergencies,' Ponta said.
'This conference, held in Romania after many years - the last time was back in 1976, when our incumbent minister of agriculture wasn't even planned to be born - is an opportunity for Romania to host an important conference and debates on the regional policy, not only in Europe, but also in Central Asia countries, on the fight against the food wasting, on development and food security,' the Prime Minister added.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development was the host of the 29th ERC of FAO and the 38th session of FAO's ECA between April 1 and 4, at the Parliament Palace.
