Romania, 1st in EU for the area cultivated with maize

Romania occupied the 1st place for the area cultivated with maize and the 2nd place for production, after France, according to provisional data for the main crops in 2014 on Tuesday published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

In 2014, Romania obtained a production of 11.73 tonnes of grain maize, from a total cultivated area of 2.43 million hectares, representing an yield of 4.183 kilograms per hectare. France obtained 18.39 million tonnes from a total area of 1.77 million hectares, with an yield of 10,383 kilograms per hectare. The best yield, of 11,238 kilograms per hectare was scored by Spain, which obtained a total production of grain maize of 4.69 million tonnes from a total cultivated area of 417,000 hectares.

"The maize yield achieved by Romania is the smallest compared to the one achieved by the main maize cultivating Member States," specified the INS.

In 2014, Romania occupied the 5th place considering the area cultivated with wheat (2.07 million hectares), after France (some 5.30 million hectares), Germany (some 3.22 million hectares), Poland (some 2.34 million hectares) and Spain (some 2.17 million hectares) and also considering the production (7.45 million tonnes), after France (38.99 million tonnes), Germany (approx. 27.78 million tonnes), United Kingdom (16.62 million tonnes) and Poland (11.63 million tonnes). Considering the yield, our country is among the lower yield per hectare wheat cultivating Member States (with a 3,601 kilograms per hectare yield).

In 2014, the area cultivated with grain maize and the area cultivated with wheat represented 45.9 per cent and 39.0 per cent of the area cultivated with cereals for grains, respectively. The production of cereals for grains increased by 3.4 per cent as against the previous year, due to the increase of the yields per hectare (average yield), as follows: maize grains (+7.2 per cent), barley and two-row barley (+6.3 per cent), wheat (+3.8 per cent) and oats (+1.5 per cent), shows the INS.

Romania also occupied the 1st place in the EU, in 2014, in both the area cultivated (993,400 hectares)with sunflower and the production (2.12 million tonnes), Romania occupied in 2014 the 1st place among the main sunflower cultivating Member States, followed by Bulgaria (2.04 million tonnes from 850,000 hectares cultivated) and France (1.55 million tonnes from 655,200 hectares cultivated).

"In the case of the oilseed crops, the production increased by 15.1 per cent, due to the increase of both the cultivated area (+4.7 per cent) and of the yields per hectare. Increases in the production were registered for: rapeseed and soya (+61.0 per cent) and (+35.3 per cent), respectively, mainly due to the increase of the cultivated area (+48.4 per cent) and (+17.6 per cent), respectively. The area cultivated with sunflower decreased by 7.6 per cent," shows the INS.

Considering the area cultivated with potatoes (198,600 hectares), Romania occupied the 3rd place in 2014 after Poland (266,900 hectares) and Germany (244,800 hectares) and the 7th place at production (after Germany - 11.60 million tonnes, Netherlands - 7.03 million tonnes, France - 6.95 million tonnes, Poland - 6.30 million tonnes, Belgium - 4.38 million tonnes and United Kingdom - 4.21 million tonnes) due to the inferior yield.
