Nine out of ten patients not aware of heart insufficiency

About a million Romanians suffer from heart insufficiency, that is 4.7% of people over 35, but nine out of ten Romanians do not they have this affection, according to the latest study made by the Romanian Cardiology Society.

“Much more attention should be paid to cardiac insufficiency because it is one of the main serious affections that generates major costs in the health system, due to treatments and devices needed, to the high number of hospital admissions and their social effects. In Romania there are about one million patients suffering from cardiac insufficiency, representing 4.7% of people over 35. Of them nine out of ten do not know they suffer from that affection,” said Gabriel Tatu-Chitoiu, cardiologist at Floreasca Emergency Hospital and president of the Romanian Cardiology Society.

“People are more afraid of cancer, but do not know that the rate of death caused by cancer is 2.5 times lower than death by cardiovascular diseases, that is 20% per year for patients suffering from cardiac insufficiency. If we talk about cancer, most people are very scared. If we speak about cardiac insufficiency, things are different. Both patients and a part of medical staff recognize the illness too late,”said Ioan Mircea Coman, MD, head of the cardiology section of “C.C. Iliescu” Institute of Heart Diseases and president of the Romanian Heart Foundation.
