Infrastructure: Romania's 2022 road freight volume goes up 5.8 pct compared to 2021
Romania's road freight volume in 2022 was 5.8 percent higher compared to 2021, while the volume of goods transported by rail was 3.9 percent lower, shows data centralized by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
National transport accounted for 82.9 percent of the total of 324.526 million tons of road freight, marking an increase of 6.7 percent compared to the previous year. Freight distances were 4 percent up from 2021, with national transport recording an advance of 7.5 percent.
The rail freight volume amounted to 55.188 million tons, of which domestic transport accounted for 78.2 percent.
Maritime freight stood at 60.260 million tons, of which 60.247 million in international shipments. Compared to 2021, the total volume of goods was 13.4 percent higher.
Goods transported on inland waterways totaled 28.62 million tons, with domestic transport accounting for 34.3 percent thereof. The volume of transported goods was 10.9 percent down compared to 2021, while the shipping distance decreased by 20.4 percent.
The amount of oil moved through main pipelines stood at 6.902 million tons, by 8.1 percent more compared to the previous year.
Air shipments totaled 51,000 tons, up 22.7 percent compared to 2021.
Last year, 63.4 percent of the domestic road freight was over distances between 1-49 km, 20.6 percent was over distances between 50-149 km, and 12.8 percent over distances between 150-499 km. As regards transport on inland waterways, 56.1 percent of the shipments were over distances between 150-299 km.
Own-account transport represented 56.7 percent of the total road freight, and 17.1 percent of the total amount of goods were registered in international transport. Of the latter category totaling 55.38 million tons, transport between third countries represented 46.2 percent, cabotage accounted for 22 percent, and loaded goods 17.5 percent.
91.2 percent of all unloaded international road shipments came from EU member states and 94.2 percent of all loaded goods were bound for EU states. The countries accounting for the largest share of unloaded goods were Germany (18.7 pct), Hungary (15.6 pct) and Italy (11.9 pct), while in terms of loaded goods, the destination countries with the largest shares were Germany (17.4 pct), Italy (16.7 pct) and Hungary (13.6 pct).
