Healthcare: Oncologist physicians request performing equipment and innovating treatments for cancer patients
Oncologists pointed out on Tuesday, at a specialised conference, the need of funds allocated for performing equipment and the implementation of innovating treatments for cancer patients.
Alxandru Grigorescu, senior physician at “Prof. Dr. Alexandru Trestioreanu” Institute, said at the conference “Pria Oncology - Access to treatment. System reformation. Price. Education and prevention” that the oncology field in Romania continues to be behind other European countries.
Doctor Nicolae Verga, from Coltea Hospital, said that the Romanian health system allocated millions of euros for classical chemotherapy but overall survival rate is only 2-3 additional months.
“We have radiotherapy, but we do not have para-clinical labs to determine the real degree of therapy response, labs determining circulating tumour cells of genetic oncology. We wonder why patients get metastasis because we did not know there are circulating tumour cells. Tests are made in Greece, but we don’t have our own immune-therapies. There have been many research projects in national plans but where is the application? We don’t even have Polidin. How can we have immune therapy if Cantacuzino Institute exists but does not work”, Varga said.
Physicians participating in the conference claimed the lack of the latest oncology medication to treat cancer, and also of radiotherapy equipment in many counties.
