Healthcare: Market of over-the-counter (OTC) medicines reached 780.3 million lei in Romania in the first three months of 2017
The market of over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, dietary supplements and personal care medical devices reached 780.3 million lei in Romania in the first three months of the year, a 22 pct increase over the same period in 2016, informs a specialised study released on Tuesday.
According to Cegedim (market research company - ed.n.) data, between March 2016 and March 2017, the largest market share was recorded in the Lifestyle OTC category, 22.6 pct, while in the first three months of 2017, the non-prescription drugs in the cold, flu and allergies category have positioned themselves at the top of the sales with a market share of 27.4 pct due to the seasonality of the targeted diseases.
"The OTC market segment in Romania, including non-prescription drugs, dietary supplements and personal care medical devices, recorded a 22 pct increase in the first three months of 2017 as compared to the same period last year (...). This segment, worth 780.3 million lei in the above-mentioned period, continues the upward trend it has followed in recent years, against the background of the overall growth of the pharmaceutical market in Romania," the quoted study further mentions.
At European level, according to the data provided by AESGP, the social and economic value of personal care is due to the fact that people self-manage common health problems, the intervention of health professionals being minimal, which allows for savings of over 1.6 billion Euro to the European health systems, note the researchers.
