Cars: Over 3,500 ecological cars sold in Romania in first 7 months

Romanians bought 3,541 ecological cars in the first 7 months of the year, 60% more than a year ago, Automotive Manufacturers and Importers Association (APIA) data show.

According to the analysis made by car manufacturers and importers in Romania, the share of new ecological cars in the total number of sales at national level was 3.4% in the reference period, compared to 2.5% recorded over January-July 2018.

At the same time, of all ecological car sales, recorded in the first 7 months of the year, most of them (2,670) are hybrid cars, on the rise by 55.3%, against the same period of 2018, while 714 units are electric (+134.1%), and 157 are from the plug-in category (16.5%).

APIA statistics show  that 562 “green”cars were sold in July 2019, on the drop by 19% compared to the previous month, when 694 units were sold.

According to APIA data, Nissan ranked first in the top of most sold 100%  electric cars in the first 7 months, with 218 units ( against 4 cars sold the previous year), followed by Renault with 194 units (+208.4%), Volkswagen (98 cars, +21%), Smart (86 units, +17.8%), BMW (81 units,+22.7%),  Jaguar (19 units, against 0 in 2018), Audi (11 units against 0) and Mercedes Benz (1).

At the same time, most hybrid cars sold in Romania  were made by Toyota- 2,366 units, Lexus (124), Ford (57), Honda (41), Kia (29), Suzuki (26), Hyundai (24) and Land Rover (3).

In the top of plug-in cars, Mitsubishi ranks first with 54 units, followed by Volvo – 43 units, Land Rover (21), Porsche (19), BMW (14), Minis (4) and Mercedes Benz (2).

In 2018, the number of green cars (electric, hybrid and plug-in) sold in Romania was 4,572, on the rise by 65.7% against 2017. Of this total, 3,585 units were hybrid cars (+59.8% against 2017), 682 were 100% electric (+102.4%) and 305 plug-in (+72.3%).

At the end of last year, the share of new ecological cars in overall sales, at national level was 2.9%, while in the same period of 2017 it was 2.1%.
