Cars : New vehicle registrations in Romania advance 12.1pct seven months into 2022

As many as 70,028 new motor vehicles were registered in Romania in the first seven months of 2022, up 12.1% y-o-y, according to data with the Association of Automobile Manufacturers and Importers (APIA).

After a significant development in the first months, July 2022 witnessed a 18.9% decrease in vehicle registrations on a yearly basis, after five months of growth since the beginning of this year.

"If we compare it to previous years, the month of July 2022 is down 2.6% compared with the similar period in 2020 and 43.9% as against July 2021," according to APIA officials.

On the domestic market, the ranking of the top 10 car brands plus commercial vehicles after seven months of 2022, is led by Dacia (20,124 units), followed by Ford (7,070 units), Toyota (6,112 units), Renault (5,744 units), Hyundai ( 5,612 units), Volkswagen (5,036 units), Skoda (4,839 units), Mercedes Benz (4,168 units), Peugeot (2,477 units), and BMW (1,696 units).

There were 11,987 passenger car units (which represent approximately 83% of the total) registered in July 2022, down 22% y-o-y.

"By type of fuel of the registered cars in the first seven months of 2022, gasoline engines registered an increase of 10.1% as against the same period of 2021, thus reaching a share of 65.3%. As for cars equipped with diesel engines, they reported a 29.3% decrease from the first seven months of 2021 holding a share of 14.1% of the total," according to APIA.

On the other hand, electrified vehicles end up after seven months of 2022 with a market share of 20.7%, which exceeds by 6.6% and 4,636 units the share held by diesel engines.

Electric cars (Full Electric) came to represent 7.9% of the registrations in Romania in the first seven months of 2022, with a spectacular increase from 2021, when they made up only 1.9% of the market.

All these recorded a 10.9% increase in July 2022 compared with July 2021. More importantly, in July 2022, compared to the same period in 2021, full electric vehicles registered a 47.8% increase.

"Same as in 2021, when, although there was a decrease in the purchases of passenger cars in general, the green ones performed well, in 2022, the purchases in this category doubled (+106.4%) from the same period of the year before. It is worth noting the important increase of 100% electric (+371%) and plug-in hybrid (+81.3%) vehicles. Moreover, in the first seven months of 2022, it is worth noting the evolution at the top of the ranking where the first 5 best-selling 100% electric cars are Dacia Spring, with 2,982 units, a model released in 2021, with a 45-fold increase compared to the same period of the previous year; Tesla Model 3, 335 units, up 17 times from 2021; Hyundai Kona with 276 units, up 196.8%; Volkswagen e-UP! with 268 units, up 44.9%, and Renault Zoe with 159 units, increasing by 55.9%."

As for the plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, the top five is led by Ford Kuga, with 234 units, +220.5%, followed by Mercedes Benz GLE with 156 units, +92.6%, Renault Captur with 146 units and down 7%, Hyundai Tucson with 135 units, up 181.3% ,and Mercedes Benz GLC with 132 units, up 34.7%.

The ranking of the not off-vehicle charging hybrid electric vehicles (NOVC-HEV) is topped by Toyota Corolla with 1,420 units, up 17.6% from 2021, followed by the Toyota C-HR with 1,175 units and a 10.8% increase, then Toyota RAV4 with 983 units, up 24.9%.

An analysis of trends in the all-wheel drive cars (4x4) after seven months in 2022, show they have a market share of 20.7% for a total volume of 14,494 units, down 0.8% from 2021 , when 14,612 units were registered.

By type of ownership, most vehicle purchases in July 2022 were made by legal entities, which cover 57% of all car purchases. In the first seven months of 2022, legal entities made up 59%, with the difference of 41% held by natural persons.
