Cars: New car sales grew by 11.6% in first 8 months. Five times more second hand cars (APIA)

New car sales grew by 11.6% in the first 8 months of the year, compared to the same period of 2016, automobiles recording an increase of 14.5%, according to statistic data of the Association of Automobile Producers and Importers (APIA), published on Wednesday.

On the other hand, about 338,000 second hand cars were registered over January-August 2017, five times more than new cars.

APIA representatives say that new car sales grew because of purchases made by private persons, whose detachment from the “Old cars” program is more and more obvious.

According to the Association, 97,605 new cares were delivered in 8 months, of which 12,226 in August alone. Cars represent 83% of total deliveries made, with 80,829 units. Overall vehicle deliveries in the market (cars + commercial vehicles) recorded a general increase of 11.6% in the first 8 months, compared to the same period of 2016.

In Romania, car sales made in the first 8 months of 2017 were, as in previous years, backed by purchases made by companies, whose share was 64% compared to 36% private persons. In the latter category there is a 6% of the share, and 36% of the volume of purchases made, compared to the January-August 2016 interval.

The top of car makes (automobiles + commercial vehicles) is headed by Dacia, with 26,269 units, followed by Volkswagen (9,902), Ford (7,810), Renault (7,777) and Skoda (7,278).

For automobiles, according to quantities delivered, the first is Dacia with 24,002 units (29.7% market share), followed by Volkswagen (8,913 units, 10.9% market share), Skoda (7,278 units, 9% of overall market), Ford (5,441 units, 6.7% market share), and Opel (4,029 units, 5% of market).

With its 9,857 units sold, Dacia Logan is the best sold model in the first 8 months of 2017, followed by Dacia Sandero with 5,366 units, Dacia Duster (4,970), Skoda Octavia (3,051) and Renault Clio (2,529).

According to the type of fuel, cars running on gasoline start to dominate the market with 51.1% of total, slightly dropping compared to the share they had after the first 8 months of 2016 (50.9%).

APIA shows that the segment of ecological automobiles (electric and hybrid) reached a share of 1.9% of overall deliveries made in the first 8 months of 2017.

On the other hand, according to the favourite colour, white and grey dominate the demand, recording 31% and 25.1% of preferences. Blue follows with 14.3% and black 10%.

Last but not least, there is the country of origin: 27.5% are local cars, 22.8% are made in Germany, 11.1% are from the Czech Republic, 8.3% in Spain and 7.6% in Turkey. In this context, compared to 2016, local automobile deliveries grew by 14.2% in 2017 and imported cars grew by 14.6%.
