Motor vehicle sales surged by 14.4 per cent year on year to 36,053 units in January - April, while the relevant domestic production decreased by 6.4pct, according to data released Wednesday by Romania's Automotive Manufacturers and Importers Association (APIA).
By categories, car sales advanced by 9.4pct compared to the similar period of 2015, to 27,993 units or 77.5 percent of all vehicle sales. Companies and public bodies were 89pct of the car buyers, and individuals only 11pct, a proportion also seen in the past years.
Also in the first four months of 2016, 134,344 motor vehicles were produced in Romania, a figure down by 6.4pct YOY. Dacia led with 116,374, and Ford was second with 17,970.
By brands, Dacia was the top seller with a market share of 27.7pct, followed by Volkswagen (10.9pct), Skoda (10.5pct), Ford, Renault, Opel, etc.
Car exports amounted to 121,597 units over the said period, down 4.9pct YOY.
According to APIA, Diesel vehicles are still the majority in Romania, with 55.7pct. Hybrid and full electric car sales advanced by 112pct, but on small volumes (from 92 units in January - April 2015 to 195 in the similar period of 2016).
