Agriculture: Study: Romania imported vegetables of 516 million euros in 2019
Vegetable imports grew in Romania in 2019 to 516 million euros. In the top of products there were frozen vegetables, potatoes, carrots, dry beans and tomatoes, according to a study made by Tara Mea Cooperative, released on Tuesday.
According to the source, vegetable imports even over July-August 2019 when Romania abounded of local vegetables.
Data centralized by Tara Mea Cooperative show that, in July 2019 alone, Romania imported 25,635 tons of vegetables, worth 20.6 million euros, and the top of products included frozen vegetables, potatoes, carrots, dry beans, tomatoes and onions.
Similar values were recorded in the other months, although local crops were in full season. In August Romania imported 25,097 tons of vegetables, in July 25,635 tons, in June 32,804 tons and in September 34,249 tons.
At the same time, April was the month with the largest imports (96,631 tons), while in August the smallest volumes were imported – 25,097 tons, the study shows, quoting data from the National Statistics Institute (INS).
In 2019, vegetable imports reached 740,000 tons, worth 516 million euros, reported 678,318 tons and a value of 424.3 million euros in 2018, official statistics show.
The main vegetable suppliers were the Netherlands and Poland, with other 10,000 tons, followed by Turkey, Germany, France, Greece, Hungary, Spain, Italy and Egypt.
On the other hand, exports reached 121,000 tons worth 95.6 million euros.
Tara Mea Cooperative includes about 940 members, farmers with activities, starting with vegetable growing, dairy processing and pork and poultry meat processing. At present, Kaufland Romania is the main sales market of the cooperative, a wide range of products being delivered: fruit and vegetables, canned products, pork and poultry meat, eggs, dairy products, bakery products,etc.
