Agriculture: Romania will have this year the biggest production of grapes of the last three years
Romania will have this year a record over the last three years for the production of grapes and wine, the producers estimating a growth of at least 20% against 2012, over 4 million hectolitres, announced the National Employers of Wine and Vineyards. ‘ Two are the main reasons which lead to this conclusion: the new cultivated surfaces getting to production as a result of the investment made through SAPARD and the National Programme Support for the Vineyard Sector 2008 – 2013 ( almost 30,000 ha) and the abundant rain during this year ( almost 15% more than the previous year) the PNVV press release says.
The data of the ministry of agriculture showed the fact that in Q1 of the year the imports of wine were almost four times higher than exports, representing 10,067 tons. Romania exported 2,682 tons of wine, more by 15% against the same period of last year. As value, the exports reached 3,68 mil.euro, growing by 18% against the Q1 in 2012.
Romania is kept in the top of the biggest ten wine consumers at world level, with a consumption of 22-24 litre per capita, which is half of the developed states with an average of 50 litres per head.
The vineyard heritage represents 2.4% of the cultivating surface of Romania which places us the sixth in Europe according to the vineyard surface and seventh for grapes and wines production. The wine production was last year of 3.31 mil.hectolitres, 2009 was the highest point in production with a production of 5.36 mil.hectolitres.
The wine industry is estimated at 400 million euro, the most important producers being Vincon, Murfatlar, Cotnari and Jidvei.
