Agriculture: Romania in deficit in foodstuff trade
Romania maintained the trade deficit with foodstuff after the first three quarters of 2016, exports advancing by 2.7% compared to the same period of 2015, to 4.322 billion euros, while imports totalled 4.57 billion euros, a plus of 9.3%, according to data centralized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR).
In the first 9 months of 2016, trade deficit with foodstuff amounted to 254 million euros, while in the same period of 2015 Romania recorded a slight excess of 22.83 million euros.
According to MADR over 5.9 million tons of foodstuff were imported in the mentioned period, exports being two times bigger- over 12 million tons.
Statistics show that fresh and refrigerates pork meat was in the top of imports from EU and third countries, with 241 million euros (141,640 tons), pastry, bakery products and biscuits - 177 million euros (89,209 tons), wheat -171 million euros (1.15 million tons), sugar made from sugar cane or sugar beet and chemically pure saccharose- 145.2 million euros (376,528 tons) and coffee - 140.3 million euros (37,149 tons).
Romania continues to obtain the highest incomes from deliveries of cereals to EU and non EU countries, wheat ranking first with 862.86 million euros and 5.2 million tons. Cigars rank second with 577.46 million euros(38.388 tons), followed by rape seeds- 482.88 million euros (1.29 million tons), corn with 400.11 million euros (1.81 million tons), sunflower seeds -256.46 million euros (574,586 tons) and barley -178.18 million euros (1.21 million tons).
EU remains the main partner in Romania’s foodstuff trade, as foodstuff of 2.564 billion euros and 4.5 million tons of products were delivered in the first 9 months of 2016. At the same time Romania imported from EU 4.69 million tons of foodstuff of 3.76 billion euros.
7.53 million tons of produce of 1.758 billion euros were exported to third countries in the same period, while 1.237 million tons of foodstuff of 814.1 million euros were imported.
