Agriculture : Over two thirds of the wheat harvest is good for bakery
Over two thirds of the wheat harvest is good for bakery, even if the rains diminished not only the quality but the production of this year, stated for Agerpres the chairman of the Romanian Employers’ Association in the MillingIndustry, Bakery and Flour Products (ROMPAN) Aurel Popescu.
‘The analyses made by IBA ( the Institute for Food bioresources) on 80% of the wheat production obtained this year shows that over two thirds of the harvest is good for bakery. Unfortunately, the rains of the harvesting period reduced not only the quality of the harvest but the quantity as well, but we have the consumption assured, domestically as well as export potential of almost 3 million tons’ Popescu said.
He said that the wheat sells at present for 700 – 720 lei per ton, directly from the mill, the price being a bit higher than the value recorded during the same period of 2013.
‘Producers ask for more for the ton of wheat, around 200 euro, although the foreign stock exchanges sell at lower prices. Practically, the price is established in Constanta harbour by the big traders present in the cereals trade’ the Rompan head shows. The quantity necessary for domestic consumption is three million tons (almost 250,000 tons monthly) plus another 500,000 tons of wheat for seed.
According to the data of the ministry of agriculture, the wheat production obtained this year was 7.37 million tons, easily over the level of last year of 7.343 million tons, but under the estimates of farmers of 8 million tons.
