Agriculture: Ministry of Agriculture: Corn production drops by 9% in 2019
In 2019 Romania obtained 16.99 million tons of corn maize, on the drop by 9% (1.67 million tons) compared to 2018, when it obtained 18.66 million tons, although the area was bigger by 240,000 ha, according to data supplied by the Ministry of Agriculture.
In 2019, the area cultivated with corn exceeded 2.65 million ha, while in 2018 lands growing corn occupied 2.41 million hectares. This year's profit was about 6,500 kg/ha.
For the crop of 18.6 million tons obtained in 2018, CE asked Romania to review figures because it sent a crop higher than the one obtained, but former minister Petre Daea, did not review anything because figures were the real ones.
On the other hand, for sunflower, Romania ranked first in EU with an overall production of 3.489 million tonnes and a plus of 13.93% - 426,750 tonnes against 2018. The profit for sunflower was 2,660 kg/ha.
In 2019 the area planted with sunflower was of 1.31 million hectares, on the rise from1.007 million ha in 2018.
The increase of areas cultivated with corn and sunflower was due to the loss of areas where rape was grown because of drought. On those lands sunflower seeds and corn were planted.
According to MADR data, the 2019 crops of wheat and rye recorded a plus of 2.51% with 255,399 tonnes, from 10,172 million tonnes the previous year to 10,427 million tonnes in 2019 from 2.1 million hectares, and a profit of 5,800 kg/ha. The best results were obtained in the counties of Giurgiu – over 5,800 kg/ha, Satu Mare – 5,700 kg/ha, Braila and Dolj – 5,300 kg/ha each.
According to MADR data, additional crops were obtained in 2019 for barley (+5.12%- 95,716 tonnes), with a total of 1.966 million tonnes, against 1.87 million tonnes in 2018 and a per hectare average of 4,100 kg/ha. For peas, crops reached 247,252 tonnes (+43.32%- 74,740 tonnes against 2018) and a profit of 2,300 kg/ha.
The sugar beet production grew slightly against 2918 by 0.38%, 3,741 tonnes, a total of 982,007 tonnes and a cultivated area of 22,801 hectares.
On the other hand, Romania had lower crops in 2019 against 2018 for corn and rape for oil, potatoes, table and wine grapes, rice and tomatoes.
The rape crop dropped by half compared to 2018 (-57%), from 1.61 million tonnes to 685,723 tonnes, while autumn potatoes recorded a production lower by 29.23% against 2018, to 2.139 million tonnes (3.022 million tonnes in 2018), on an area of 142,594 ha. Oat crops recorded drops of 29.04% to 272,284 tonnes, table grapes (minus 21.34%) with total of 56,165 tonnes , while wine grapes minus 8.72% against 2018 and a production of 979,303 tonnes in 2019.
Tomato crops dropped by 7.38% in 2019 compared to 2018, from 742,899 tonnes to 688,068 tonnes, while soy crops dropped by 2.92% to 452,004 tonnes.
28,000 tonnes to rice , 398,000 tonnes of plums and 362,000 tonnes of apples were obtained in 2019.
According to INS statistics, the value of agriculture yield in 2018 was of 86.35 billion lei, while in 2017 it was 78.494 billion lei. Higher values were obtained in 2019 and also I 2017 in South Muntenia, South Eastern and North Eastern areas of the country.
