Agriculture: Minister Fuia: Area cultivated with genetically modified corn drops in Romania

The total surface area of land cultivated with genetically modified corn in Romania moves downwardly and most likely this year there will be 300 less hectares cultivated with GM corn, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Stelian Fuia said on Monday on occasion of the inauguration of the new headquarters of the National Research Development Institute for Food Bioresources - IBA Bucharest.

On the other hand, Stelian Fuia said the legislation will be amended in order to sort out the problem of the taxation of registered agricultural devices.

According to Fuia, tighter controls will be conducted in the markets after the introduction of the Registry of Food Industries (RIA). As reads the bill proposing the establishment of this registry, all the economic operators in Romania who produce and trade food products will have to register for free in this system. It is also a framework act for which technical and control norms in all the activity domains of the food industry will be drawn up.

IBA Bucharest inaugurated on Monday the new headquarters. The place was funded through the Sectoral Operation Program Increase of Economic Competitiveness, with the allotted funds exceeding 37.1 million lei.

Stelian Fuia said the role of such an institute is 'to make sure the food on our table is of high quality.'
