Agriculture: Imports of potatoes up by 45% in the first nine months of 2016

Romania imported 120,830 tons of fresh and frozen potatoes in the first nine months of 2016 up by 45% against the similar period of 2015, according to the commercial balance with food in the intra and extra-community area.

The sums spent surpassed 27.4 million euro in the mentioned period, while in the first nine months of 2015 they were 2.4 smaller, 11.39 million euro respectively.

On the other hand, fresh and frozen potatoes exports got to 2,1600 tons after the first three quarters of 2016, being twice bigger than in the similar period of 2015 – 1,271.4 tons, the colletions being over 540,252 euro against 170,401 euro at the end of September 2015.

Both imports and exports were made in and from the countries of the EU and the extracommunity ones.

According to the MADR data in 2016 a production of 2.056 million tons of autumn was produced, dropping by 21.6% against 2015 when Romania was third after Poland and Germany from the point of view of cultivated surface and fifth for production (after Germany, France, Poland and the UK) due to inferior yield.

The Romanians consume annually on average 92 kg potatoes per inhabitant being fourth in the EU. The country is surpassed only by Portugal with 126.9kg per inhabitant per year, Ireland – 118.7 kg/inhabitant per year and the UK with 112.4 kg/inhabitant per year.
