The National Institute for Cultural Research and Training launched the “2023 Cultural Barometer. Consumption communities in context of social changes”, the most comprehensive study at national level, measuring practices of culture consumers.
The barometer points out, in point of book consumption, that in 2023, 59% of respndents read printed or digital books. Of them, 22% read between 1 and 5 books, 13% between 6 and 10 books, 10% read an average of one book per month. 19% of respondents went to libraries to read or loan books, at least once in 2023, while 16% of Romanians participated in a bok fair at least once, last year.
In 2023, 49% of respondents preferred to listen to folk music, 18% to rock music, 17% to foreign pop, 14% to classical music, a.s.o.
As for public cultural activities, the main results point out that 34% of respondents went to cinema at least once in 2023, a figure close to that before the pandemic, and only 10% can be considered faithful cinema goers. About 14% of respondents watched a film at a festival at least once in 2023.
As for home cultural activities, 53% of respondents accessed streaming platforms to watch movies and under 50% of households at national level have subscriptions to various platforms. About 29% of respondents watch series movies for several hours a day, practising “binging”, which indicates the public preference for episodes in a series, as well as compulsive consumption.
Analyses results point out the fact that modifying film consmption practices is connected not only to technological development, but also to changes in contemporary life style.
The study of 2023 Cultural Consumption Barometer is based on an opinion poll made th Romanian Institute for Evaluation and Strategy, over September-October 2023 on a representative national sample for people 18 years of age or older.
The sample volume is about 1035 people, with a maximum error of +/- 3.1%, a confidence level of 95%. Questionnaires were applied through CATI method, on a simple, random sample, by generating phone numbers valid in Romania through Randm Digit Dialing.
